Animes about Cricket | why there isn't any anime about cricket?
Let's talk about cricket in anime. Cricket is a team sports where two teams compete eachother and whoever scores more with bat, wins the game. It is very similar to baseball if you want a brief idea but watch it closely and you will find how complex and fun game it is. Cricket is the most popular sports in India. Indians love cricket at an extreme level. From old dudes to little kids everyone watches cricket but the thing is that only few countries play cricket at international level and popularity of cricket is zero in western countries and east asian countries.
For most cricket fans, it's not a big deal if other countries play or not but for we otakus, it matters. Due to less popularity in East Asian countries, there isn't any anime or even manga about cricket. That is also the reason why sports anime are not popular in India cause only sports we Indians are interested in is Cricket of course.
Why there isn't any anime about cricket?
One of the biggest reason is popularly but it's not the only reason cause if it was then there won't be any anime about kabbadi but there is. If you don't know then there is an anime about kabbadi named "burning kabbadi". Not just that, before release of haikyuu, vollyball was also not very popular in Japan but now it is cause reason for its creation was generating popularity for vollyball and it succeeded in doing so. So question is, if vollyball could become popular then cricket too if it gets a good adaptation right? Then why it still don't have any anime? Is it impossible to create an anime on cricket? Let's find answer of this question.
Is it even possible to create an anime on cricket?
Short answer is Yes! Nothing is impossible in this world but still it is little difficult to create a cricket anime because-
1. There is just too many rules to introduce to new audiences. Japanese people don't know much about cricket so it would be the priority for the anime to introduce the rules but there is a lot to begin with so anime needs to skip some minor rules.
2. Skipping the minor rules and aiming to explain all major rules is a good idea but skipping those rules could create plot holes.
3. Cricket has 4 formats i.e. test match, odi, T20 and t10. Among 4 a T20 match looks best option but just ignoring the original test match cricket is little rude and disrespectful to the game. That's what I think if you think that it's not a big deal then skip this point.
4. Animating a cricket game is very difficult. Unlike baseball, cricket's bowling action is not that simple, every bowling type has its own bowling action and same goes to batting. There are 100s of different shots in cricket, animating any of them is not easy especially the classic ground shots. Working on them could increase the budget but skipping them will down grade the overall quality.
Above points shows that creating an anime on cricket is difficult and a big challenge to any director but it's not impossible so don't give up yet. Maybe in future when anime become more popular in India then we get an anime about cricket which will be specially created for Indian fans so keep your spirits high.
Is there really isn't any anime about cricket?
There are many Indian films and cartoons on cricket but there isn't any anime created be Japan directly. Well that means there is a series created by Japanese and Indian companies together specially for Indian audiance and it is called Suraj: The Rising Star.
Suraj: The Rising Star is an official Indian remake of a Japanese anime called Star of the Giants (Japanese translation, kyojin no Hoshi) which is based on baseball.
About Star Of The Giants (kyojin no hoshi)
Star of the Giants is a Japanese sports manga series written by Ikki Kajiwara and illustrated by Noboru Kawasaki. It was serialized in Kodansha's Weekly Shōnen Magazine from 1966 to 1971. It is about the actual baseball team Yomiuri Giants using fictional characters. It was launched by the "Yomiuri Group" which at the time owned not only the actual baseball team, but the TV network Nippon Television, the newspaper Yomiuri Shimbun, as well as Yomiuri Telecasting Corporation. It was adapted into an anime television series broadcast in Japan in 1968. It later spawned two anime sequels and different anime movies.
A small review of Suraj: The Rising Star
Overview
Suraj: The Rising Star is an Indian animated television series jointly created with Japan and presented by KODANSHA Inc., TMS Entertainment and DQ Entertainment. It is an Indian remake of Japanese anime called Star of the giants. It was created in 2012 and aired at India channel Colours/Colours HD. The series has only one season with 26 episodes.
Plot
Suraj, a bowler par excellence, hails from the slums of Mumbai. He faces scores of challenges and hardships to attain his goal of becoming a cricket player.
My opinion
The series has an amazing ratings of 8.6/10 in IMDB but if you ask me then series is just decent. It got a decent animation and story is also very simple.
