 Death Note vs Code Geass & light vs Lelouch. The end of debate!

Death note and code Geass are two of the best strategical animes of all time. Both animes have very iconic protagonists that is why there is a constant clash between both fandoms and due to similarities between main characters, people often compare both series. From a long time people are debating on this topic that is why today I decided to end this debate right here right now.

Before starting I should tell you that this article is based from my perspective and before jumping to any conclusion I gave proper reason so if you disagree then write it down in comment section with proper reason. 

Now let me remind you our goal. Our goal is to give conclusion to these debates:- 

1. Which series is better: Death Note or Code Geass
2. Who is better protagonist: Light or Lelouch 

Are you excited to know the answer? Then don't just scroll down. Read it line by line cause that is more fun. Also if you will just go for results then you will miss the reasons behind it and then you will blame me and this won't end the debate which is my end goal. So be patient. Enough talk! 

Let's begin...

Plot of Death note 

On a normal day Light yagami finds a magical notebook that has ability to kill anyone whose name written on it under 40 seconds. Light decided to use that book to kill criminals. Now suddenly rate of death of criminals increased which made it a mystery. Now Japanese police hand over this case to the top detective of the country named L. Will Light get caught or will he bring peace to this world? Watch the anime first to know the answer.

Plot of Code Geass 

Story of code Geass set on an alternate world where a country named Britannia took over whole world including Japan. All citizens lost their rights and identity. To counter this, Lelouch uses his power of grass which gives him ability to give any person any command for once while looking at their eyes. Now lelouch's mission to dethrone Britannia begins. Will he be successful in his mission? 

Reason for debate? 

The debate between the two is on anime community from a very long time. But probably you be thinking "why?" right? We never compare two totally different things. We will never compare one piece with one punch man cause they don't have any similarly at all but In case of Death Note and Code Geass there is a lot of similarities which results in compitition or should I say debate. Now you probably be thinking about similarities between two animes and that is why we have done that for you too. So let's look at similarities between Code Geass and Death Note - 

1. Both anime features similar very protagonist. Both are very intelligent, anti-heros, have a secret identity, wants to bring peace, have superpower, similar personalities and even name that starts with a similar letter i.e. "L". 
2. *Spoiler alert* In the end of the series both protagonists die. 
3. Both animes started airing in same year. 
4. And most importantly both animes belong to similar genre. 

Despite these similarities both anime have their own speciality. But now its time to settle the score. So let's start comparing Death Note and Code Geass in following aspects 

1. Characters 

In this category we will not include Light and Lelouch. This catagory will only feature secondary character and side characters cause our protagonists deserves their own catagory. So let's continue. 

Both animes have excellent side characters and when it comes to quantity then Code Geass is winner cause Code Geass features more characters and of different kinds but, when it comes to quality then Death Note gets the trophy. When in comes to side characters then L can solo Code Geass. Code Geass lacks a strong secondary character. If Light is brain then L is heart of the series but in Code Geass, heart is puncture. Code Geass do have Suzaku Kururugi and I agree that he was amazing till season 1 but after that he lost all his liability. Both L and Suzaku shares a lot in common but while L's character gets better and better after every episode, Suzaku's character got worse. 

Now let's come to side characters. Apart from L, Death Note have Near and Ryuk who are also very nice Characters and rest of the cast is decent and there isn't any totally thrash character in the series While Code Geass have CC, Shirley and Rollo as some great characters. Rest of the cast is decent but number of thrash characters in the series is a point of concern. Nina Einstein, Prince Charles, BB, Diethard, Marianne are some of the thrash and wasted characters of the series. 

Winner:- Death Note 

2. Animation 

Death Note is animated by studio Madhouse and Code Geass is animated by studio Sunrise. Both are very legendary anime studios and both studios done their job perfectly. Animation of both series are awesome but what makes animation of Code Geass better is originality. Code Geass is an original anime which means it is not adapted from any manga, game or visual novel. From story to character design, all is done by the studio itself which give the upper hand to Code Geass. 

Winner:- Code Geass 

3. Story 

Story of both animes are very unique. On one hand death note is purely about mind games and crime drama and on the other hand Code Geass is full of action, sci-fi and war. Story of Death Note revolves around sense of justice while in Code Geass it revolves around sense of freedom. Although story of both animes are good but from my perspective, story of Code Geass has so many flaws. The series contains lot of fight scenes but they are with Mechas or robots and I am not a very big fan of Mecha fights. Also there are so many moments in anime that are not well created for example the face off between prince charls and Lelouch which I expected to be epic but it turns out barely decent. But on the other hand Death Note never disappointed me. Even after episode 25 when some people do complain about pacing, I didn't find any flaw at all. And without thinking about this too much I can conclude that Death Note has better story.

Winner:- Death Note 

4. Pacing 

Now let's come to pacing. Death Note is one of the most consistent anime in terms of pacing. From very first episode you will be hooked on to the story and until the very end it remains intresting and mind blowing but that's not the case in Code Geass. First episode of Code Geass also showed Lelouch getting his powers but it was not that impactful as it was in Death Note. After introduction of L in episode 2 series get even better and better and till episode 10 it was unstoppable with its super engaging storyline but then Code Geass entered in the game. After episode 12 Code Geass took its pace in the story and till episode 20 it was better than Death Note and from episode 21-25 both series reached their peak. Both series are so good at that point that I conclude it a tie. Therefore episode 21-25 is a tie. From episode 26 both series got slower but I believe from 26-30 Code Geass was better. Then again from episode 31-36 of Death Note and 31-46 of code Geass is a tie. At last climax of the story arrives. Death Note episode 37 and Code Geass episode 49. Both episodes are great and deciding the winner is very difficult at this point but crown goes to Death Note.

5. Battle of Protagonists: Light vs Lelouch 

Two legendary characters and one of the biggest debate in anime community. Who is better protagonist? Both characters are very intelligent and entertaining but the connection I made with lelouch was much stronger for me then with light. In the whole series he was very clam and cool and even used his dad as a tool. He didn't care about anyone else except from himself and hasn't made any sacrifice along the journey while Lelouch lost everything. The pain and suffering Lelouch goes through was much greater. He lost his mother in his past, he lost his love and siblings, fought with his best friend and at the end lost himself. Lelouch took me through much more emotions then Light therefore, All Hail Lelouch! 

Winner:- Lelouch 

Final Results

Now it's time to announce the results. It is totally my opinion and my final decision. 

Death Note vs Code Geass 

Winner:- Death Note

Light Yagami vs Lelouch vi Britannia 

Winner:- All Hail Lelouch!

Conclusion

In the end I would like to say we don't need to compare both series. Both series have their own pros and cons and none of them is inferior or superior cause in the end it is all about perspective. 

If you love Death Note then you are more prone to crime thriller and psychological animes and if you love code Geass then you like action with character development.
