Neon genesis Evangalion: Most depressing anime ever created (Review + watch order)  

Have you watched Neon Genesis Evangalion? If not then keep reading. Neon genesis Evangalion is one of the most influential anime of all time. Anime Started as a typical Mecha anime but later it tuned onto something that still haunts many fans. Due to its horror and psychological theme it is considered as one of the most depressing anime ever created. So let's deep dive into this topic cause today we are going to review the legendary anime series while looking at series pros and cons. Also at the end I am gonna answer if Neon Genesis Evangalion series worth watching or not.

Plot 

Year 2000 when the great second impact took place which caused a massive loss for entire humanity. Now to prevent third impact, humanity must fight against huge mysterious creatures called Angels through giant robots called Eva. As the series continues it explores experience and emotions of Eva pilots who suffers a lot through these processes.

Animation 

Neon genesis Evangalion was created back in 1995 when animation wasn't that advance and same goes for NGE as its animation is decent. Fight scenes, where animation is most noticeable are well created but are short in length. Due to budget issues few fights are poorly animated but you won't notice them. 

Music & soundtrack 

The Neon Genesis series offers an amazing intro song titled "A Cruel Angel's Thesis" performed by Yoko Takahashi but it's ending is just some instrumantal music which is not very fascinating. Rest of soundtracks and OSTs are just decent, nothing special but not bad either.

Characters 

Now characters are intresting part of this anime. There are different kinds of characters with different backgrounds and personalities. Characters in this anime are very complex and knowing their motives are intresting but you need to stay focused while watching otherwise you won't understand them. 

The main protagonist of the series, Shinji lkari is very well written. He is very human and relatable and unlike other brave, energetic protagonists, he is little coward and gloomy. The amount of pressure and mental taruma he faced throughout the series makes him an unforgettable character for me.

Pros and cons of Neon Genesis Evangalion series. 

Pros 

1. Well written characters. 
2. Relatable protagonist. 
3. Psychological aspect of the anime is best of the all time. 
4. You just can't forget this anime. 

Cons 

1. This anime is not for everyone. It depends on your perspective if you gonna like it or not. 
2. Animation of the series may not be enough to satisfy your eyes. If you are not used to old animation then you may find this anime difficult to enjoy. 
3. Even if you put your full focus while watching this anime, there is still a high chance that you won't understand bunch of things and left confused till end. 
4. Many episodes of the series are just boring. 

What makes Neon Genesis Evangalion series so special ?

Despite series downsides there is no doubt that this anime is special because of its characters, story and narrative. The series wisely uses its gore elements and if you like fan servicing then this anime has that too. The balance between beautiful and disturbing scenes are very good. 

Neon genesis Evangalion is a series that could take you through different emotions and watching this series is going to be like a roller coaster ride for you. 

How to watch Neon Genesis Evangalion (Watch order)? 

Story and characters of Neon Genesis Evangalion are very complex but what's even more complex is its watch order. The series has so many reboots and alternate endings and not to forget summaries, spin-off and character arcs.

So if you don't want to drown yourself in this ocean then follow this watch order- 

(1) Neon Genesis Evangalion (1995) from episode 1-24. 

First of all start with watching original series of Neon Genesis created in 1995 from episode 1 to 24. 

(2) End of Evangalion (1997) movie 

After completing episode 24 go and watch the End of Evangalion movie which serves as the original ending of the series.  

(3) Neon Genesis Evangalion (1995) episode 25-26. (Optional) 

This step is optional cause End of Evangalion serves as original ending to the series but if you wanna know about its previous ending then go and watch it. 

And that's it! You completed Neon Genesis Evangalion series. But did you know about Rebuild of Evangalion? 

Rebuild of Evangalion 

It is nothing but a series of 4 movies that sets on alternate universe and gives an alternate ending to the series. 

Think of this as a reboot version but believe me it's also worth your time. So the watch order of Rebuild of Evangalion is- 

1) Evangelion 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone (2007)

2) Evangelion 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance (2009)

3) Evangelion 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo (2012)

4) Evangelion 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time (2021)

If you want to understand whole movie then I will recommend you to first complete Neon Genesis Evangalion series then come to rebuild series.

Final thoughts 

Neon genesis Evangalion is one of the best psychological anime of all time and a 90s masterpiece but as I already said this anime is not for everyone. You can't expect everyone to like this anime cause that's how it is created. If you are expecting to see some intense mecha battles then you are watching wrong series. If you like watching shounen animes with lot of action then you may not be ready for this anime. 

I will only recommend you watching this anime if you are used to watching psychological horror or mystry thriller animes or atleast if you want to try any unique or deep anime. But I think you should try it cause it is fun. If an anime could take you through different kinds of emotions then you can't just ignore it and at the end I wanna say just two more words, "try it".
